The History Of The Cottage

The “Thatch Cottage” is believed to have been built around 1720 as one of two “Lodges” at the entrances to Spring Park House and Farm. The earliest record of 1763 notes Jeremiah Soloman as the tenant and from 1812 – 1820 it was occupied by Colonel John Moberly of Shirley House to kennel the Surrey foxhounds. In 1837 John Temple Leader is shown as the owner with Hewitt Davis as the tenant farmer. In 1920 a sale catalogue described the Cottage as “An attractive thatched cottage, garden and allotments. Area about one acre.”

Extensions & Refreshments

From 1921 the premises were occupied by Hilda and William Brown and a single storey extension to the south of the building was added in 1936 where we understand tea, coffee and sandwiches were sold. The property was again sold in 1968 and part of the land sold off for the construction of four houses.

Fire of 1969 & Johnson's

A serious fire gutted the Cottage which was subsequently restored, re-thatched and opened as the estate office of RW Johnson & Company on the 3rd September 1969

The Allen Heritage Years

In July 2002 Allen Heritage Ltd took possession of the building and ran their estate agency business from here until relocating to 151 Wickham Road, directly opposite, in October 2014

During the last 5 years Allen Heritage have been working in conjunction with Croydon Councils to agree the restoration project that will respect and enhance both its character, charm and of course heritage.
